Spicy Italian Sausage Stew

image

A few weeks ago BV threw together THE MOST delicious stew. In the month since I was treated to the leftovers and demanded the recipe, I have made it three times.  I strongly encourage you to spend the half hour it takes to throw it together:

Cook half a thinly sliced onion or shallot and 3 cloves of garlic in 3 tablespoons of lard (the best pork lard is available in the frozen fridge at Cookbook) or Olive Oil. Then add in 3 Boccalone spicy Italian sausages. Either chopped with the casing on or broken-up bits without casing. Brown the sausage. Add-in fresh oregano, a can of San Marzano tomatoes. Simmer for 15 minutes. Add a diced, dried red pepper, 6 chopped mint leaves, beef broth, salt, green cracked pepper, two bunches of spinach, 2 pinches of brown sugar.  In the last 10 minutes add 1/2 cup of Bordeaux and simmer.  I have had it with white rice, with pasta, and (initially leftover-style) with fried potatoes and a fried egg.

You will make this again and again. Thank you, Bea!

The Silver Fox

Our dear friend, John Fox, turned his skilled, photographic eye on our house during his stay here in September.  Here are some moments he captured.

Libra and Scorpio

This year, birthday gifts were art-driven with two new pieces from the incomparable Margaret-Anne Smith and (Whitaker favorite) Hadley Holliday.

image

Margaret-Anne Smith is a South Africian painter living in Los Angeles.  From her Hollywood studio, she turns out intensely-colored, layered oil paintings that take on a sculptural quality.  This cobalt yellow now graces our mantel.

Another Margaret-Anne Smith paired with a Hadley Holliday watercolor drawing.

A generous gift from the artist.

This graphical Hadley Holliday is more masculine than other works around the house.  It seemed the perfect gift for B (with a new iPhone!).

A look at Hadley Holliday’s blog linked me to the work of Maria Walker and stopped me in my tracks.  So compelled by works that walk the line between painting and sculpture.  These are exquisite.

A couple of weeks ago, Bea and I made a fruitful trip to the Santa Maria Novella store on Melrose Place. We stocked up on beautiful conditioners, tonics, soaps and lotions.  But the BEST find was these burning papers. I grabbed a dozen for sweet, little Christmas gifts.

Santa Barbara

image

The birthday was celebrated with a day trip to Santa Barbara.  We first stopped in Summerland to browse antiques, then headed to the beach off San Ysidro Road in Montecito.  It was the dog’s first (and very memorable) beach day.  Oysters and cocktails followed at Hungry Cat.  Then a lovely visit with Kenny at Supply Room, where the inventory is looking especially great and inspiring. Dinner at Olio Pizzeria Enoteca before heading home.

Bon anniversaire!
